Koala Conservation Centre
Getaway Report

Tonight Channel Nine's Getaway program had a segment on Phillip Island's Koala Conservation Centre. Back in April of this year we did a full review of the Centre and found it to be fully accessible including the treetop boardwalks.

The Koala Conservation Centre offers visitors a chance to have a face to face encounter with arguably Australia's most loved animal. The unique tree top board walks are fully wheelchair accessible offering an inclusive experience.
Unlike a Zoo, the Koala Conservation Centre offers visitors a chance to see these lovable creatures in their natural environment. The centre has played a crucial role in saving the population of Koalas on Phillip Island.
The Visitors Centre is equipped with a cafe with accessible seating, disabled toilet facilities and an interpretative centre that will allow the visitor to leave with a full appreciation of this magnificent little creature.

Despite the Getaway segment being aimed at family groups there was no mention of the accessibility. Those ramps and boardwalks not only afford travellers with a disability the opportunity to experience a piece of Australia's unique wildlife but also offer families with young children in prams and pushers an inclusive opportunity. It is unfortunate that our mainstream travel TV shows haven't thought about inclusive travel even when they are standing on top of one of Australia's most inclusive tourist attractions.

In June we hosted the German International Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team on a day trip to Phillip Island including the Koala Conservation Centre. The team were amazed at the facilities and the chance to see Australia's Koala up so close and personal.
