Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia with a population of 3.8 million people. Melbourne is the capital city of the state of Victoria and is situated on the lower reaches of the Yarra River. Melbourne is blessed as its suburbs surround Port Phillip Bay and its miles of sandy beaches as a summer playground. Melbourne is often referred to as both the capital of Australia and is the home to both the Australian Ballet and Australian Opera. It is also the home of Australian sport being the birthplace of Australian Rules Football, the host of the Australian Grand Prix formula one and the Australian Open tennis tournament being one of the four world Grand Slam events. The city itself has both a Victorian and modern feel with many of its original bluestone buildings preserved amongst the modern high rise. It is a dining mecca with some of the countries best dinning available at all price ranges, from luxurious fine dinning, modern contemporary, open air street cafes and family dinning. Recent developments have seen new entertainment facilities built on the 'Southbank' and the 'Docklands' View our glimpses of Melbourne Photo Gallery

Outside Melbourne the state offers a wide variety of pursuits from grape grazing in the Yarra Valley and on the Mornington Peninsula, water activities on Port Phillip and Western Port Bays, great ocean scenery and surfing on the both the west coast's Great Ocean Road and the east coast's Wilson's Promontory. The state also offers some of countries best pristine National Parks whether for a casual day picnic or a week long walk.
